Dermatologists are noticing a big increase in adult females, particularly women in their 30s, presenting with adult acne, completely debunking the idea that once you’re an adult you don’t need to worry about acne. (reference NY Times article)
Doctors don’t yet fully understand what’s behind the rise in adult acne in women, but many believe it may have something to do with hormonal imbalances as women come off the contraceptive pill and adjust to a normal hormone cycle for the first time in years. The reason why doctors believe in the hormonal cause is that often the acne seems to be focused on the bottom half of face, which is typical of hormone-linked acne. Environmental factors like stress, poor diet and also cosmetics use are considered as possible contributors too.
Choosing the right skincare for you
We’re noticing that products specifically for adult acne sufferers are on the rise. Epiology is well suited to help with adult acne thanks to its naturally effective IDP formulation which penetrates deep into the pores to control acne bacteria while reducing redness and irritation.
Mature skin tends to dry out easily and react to irritating ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which are common in many other acne skincare products. Epiology has none of these nasties, making it the perfect solution for mature skin prone to mild to moderate acne.
And don’t forget…
It can be tempting to take a ‘more is more’ approach when it comes to your skincare regime, but doctors recommend that simple is best, especially if you suffer from acne. In fact, no more than 3 or 4 skincare items are needed – think cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen.
And while you may be expecting instant results from a new skincare regime, let your new products work their magic for at least a month before assessing how it’s working for you.
Finally, remember to eat well and relax (we know – easier said than done, but try to eliminate stress where you can!)
