Six expert tips for great skin this summer

Six expert tips for great skin this summer

The New Zealand sun can be harsh on our skin, and it looks like we’re in for another scorcher summer. Before you dust off your beach towel and togs, read our six expert tips to keep your skin healthy and happy this summer.

  1. Be sun smart

While a little sun can be good (hello Vitamin D), too much is likely to result in a breakout after a few days as the skin reacts to prolonged sun exposure by increasing oil (sebum) production. Protect your skin with a good sunscreen that doesn’t block your pores (opt for at least SPF30), and wear a wide-brimmed hat when you’re out and about.

  1. Maintain your skincare routine

Healthy summer skin starts with a great daily skincare routine. The EPIOLOGY 3-step system is one of the best ways to keep your skin smooth and nourished during the warmer months.

Start with the Pre-wash Cleanser to prevent bacteria, remove oil and leave skin clean and smooth, taking care to use warm or cold water (hot water can suck the moisture out of your skin).

Next, nourish and hydrate with the EPIOLOGY cream, clinically proven to prevent acne, improve skin clarity and reduce redness. Apply the cream within a few minutes of using the pre-wash cleanser to retain the skin’s natural moisture and provide a healthy barrier for your skin.

Tackle any spots with the EPIOLOGY extra strength spot gel, a double strength powerful gel formula that penetrates deeply to prevent the formation of pimples and reduce scarring.

  1. Oily skin needs moisturising too

If you have oily skin, it’s a myth that you shouldn’t moisturise. Oily skin is caused by the over-production of sebum from the sebaceous glands, which are located under the skin’s surface. Moisturising is key to keeping the skin’s barrier healthy and helps repair the sun’s UV damage.

  1. Go light on make up

Show off your summer glow by avoiding heavy, pore-clogging foundations. If you’re not ready to go completely make-up free, opt for lighter coverage with a BB cream or tinted moisturiser. Don’t forget to thoroughly remove your make up before you go to sleep!

  1. Stay cool

Sweating occurs when your core temperature starts to rise, signalling to your body to start sweating to cool itself down. This can happen a lot in summer, and it can be very uncomfortable! Make sure you drink lots of water throughout the day (not just when you’re thirsty), and keep a face mist on hand for a quick burst of coolness. Avoiding too much alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods can also help.

  1. Exercise

Exercise increases blood flow, which nourishes skin cells and keeps you looking healthy and vibrant. Exercise also helps with stress, which can sometimes lead to acne breakouts. If you’re exercising outdoors, make sure you use sunscreen and try to avoid the sun during the hottest hours in the middle of the day.
